Today’s Truth

The Twenty on the Counter

Matthew 6:21 · World English Bible

You set the twenty on the counter under the kitchen light and do the math you already know. Rent is spoken for. The truck needs a belt. What is left would cover food for a few days, or it would cover the thing you have been promising yourself since Tuesday. Your hand is already on the phone. You can feel the want in your chest before you have named it. You have been saying money is just how a man gets through the week. The twenty does not believe you.

You think the heart chooses first and the wallet follows. Jesus has it the other way. Treasure sits down, and the heart moves in after it. You have been waiting to feel generous before you give, and waiting to feel safe before you stop the leak. That wait is how a man stays owned. The dollar you hide and the dollar you burn are both worship. They just bow in different directions.

Nobody is asking you to pretend the belt can wait forever. The cost is telling the truth while the money is still in your hand. The Lord is not shaming a man who is short. He is the one who can turn a heart that has been following the money. Mercy is not a bigger balance. Mercy is a dollar sent where you say your loyalty lives, before the want spends it for you.

Today’s Challenge

Before tonight, give away part of the money in your hand to a person or a church that will not pay you back.

Pray

Father, You see the money in my hand and the want in my chest. Do not let me call fear and appetite something smaller than worship. Turn my heart, and give me courage to obey You with the next dollar. Amen.
